Data centres: Why They Need Water Leak Detection Systems

Water leak detection is commonly installed in datacentres, communications rooms and other information technology dependent structures. After all it is crucial to protect these critical assets from both fire and floods by receiving the earlier possible notification of an incident, allowing action to be taken quickly to take preventative measures. Leaking water from HVAC, AC units, water pipes, drainage or even ground water can cause significant disruption.

Post-Brexit: how has data protection compliance changed?

While much of The European Union’s General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) have been incorporated into UK law, it’s still important to consider what has changed in terms of how companies – particularly UK-based ones – ensure compliance to data protection regulations. It was argued in 2017 by Index Engines that GDPR puts personal data back in the hands of citizens. This raises the question: “Does this still apply?”

No matter what has changed, one challenge will remain: organisations’ ability to find business and legal-critical information within their vast unstructured data stores. Then there are the decisions about when to delete and where to store it, when to modify and rectify it. This is a complex issue now involving multiple petabytes of data, and organisations have no real understanding of what their unstructured data contains. With this top of mind, there is arguably a need for Wide Area Network (WAN) acceleration to gain the ability to find and move data around at high speed by mitigating latency and packet loss. This works to provide quicker data access and retrieval.

Data centre COVID-19 evolution: The cloud benefits

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a huge impact on data centres with the increased shift towards remote and home-working. The biggest winner in technology terms is the cloud. Zeus Kerravala states: “Perhaps no technology industry benefitted more from the pandemic than cloud computing; the location independence of cloud services makes them ideal for a world where the majority of line-of-business, as well as IT workers, are no longer in the office.”

But does that mean businesses will rely on infrastructure as a service (IaaS) and no longer need their own on-premises data centres and data-centre IT teams? Analysts and futurists have been asking this question for about a decade, but now cloud, already strong before the pandemic, has gone through an inflection point and brought new immediacy to the issue.

There is a tendency to jump onto the bandwagon, and the latest one is about the COVID-19 pandemic and cloud computing. Despite this, Kerravala is right to suggest that data centres aren’t going anywhere, anytime soon. In his view, they will be fundamentally different, which he sees as positive news for people working in data centres and for those seeking a data centre career because the “adoption of cloud and other changes will create a wave of new opportunities.”

The WAN way to better health outcomes

Graham Jarvis reports on why digital transformation in healthcare needs WAN acceleration.

Over the last few years healthcare across the world has, like many other industries, embraced digital transformation.

During the Covid-19 pandemic this has accelerated in that an increasing number of patients were seen by their GPs over video conferencing, otherwise known as remote consultations.

In fact, remote GP consulting shot up to 90 per cent of all GP consultations, and 46 per cent for nurses, by April 2020 compared to just 31 per cent in 2019 – according to research funded by the National Institute for Health Research.

The study involved 80 interviews with GPs, nurses, and practice managers apart from researchers examining patient consultations data to observe changes in the way consultation had changed during the pandemic when compared to the previous year.

The research into the new modus operandi, which also includes telephone consulting and other methods of handling patient communication and care, was undertaken by researchers from the Centre for Academic Primary Care (CAPC) at the University of Bristol and NIHR ARC West.

The CAPC discovered that while this shift might have been successful, but it also still had its risks. For some health conditions patients still need to see doctors.

COVID-19: Managing Transportation-as-a-Service Projects Remotely

The Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic is expected to change the way people work, well into the future. While the focus is predominantly on office workers being able to continue their roles from home, there is also an opportunity to enable a wide variety of industries to take their project work back to their humble abodes. This could even include elements of the Transportation-as-a-Service (TaaS), connected and autonomous vehicles (CAV) industries.

Despite the pandemic and after much wrangling, California’s Alameda County is permitting Elon Musk top re-open his factory in Fremont. An article of 13th May 2020 by Chauncey Alcorn for CNN Business reports, “We will be working with the Fremont Police Department to verify Tesla is adhering to physical distancing and that agreed upon health and safety measures are in place for the safety of their workers as they prepare for full production," county health officials said in a written statement.”

Lockdown: Santa Ramps Up e-Commerce with WAN Acceleration

2020 has been an unpredictable year for most people, including businesses. Santa has found it hard to plan ahead, too. Nevertheless, he hopes that Christmas will still be on. However, given social distancing rules, he doesn’t think visiting people’s homes and going down their chimneys is a viable option. Even his reindeer have been practicing it, meaning that Santa can’t carry as many presents as he usually does. Santa’s elves have been furloughed for much of the year, and so this has also reduced capacity.

However, econsultancy.com points out research from Klarna and Retail Economics, which “has found 71 percent of British consumers are reluctant to shop in store in the lead up to Christmas, which will likely increase the amount they spend online even further over the coming months. Indeed, 56 percent say they expect to do more online shopping this year than they have in previous years."

Witch WAN Solution Mitigates The Fright Of Latency and Packet Loss?

Digital transformation strategies: Should shaken SD-WAN confidence lead to WAN acceleration?

Before the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown struck, the predictions for software-defined wide area networks (SD-WANs) were glowingly positive. A Cato Networks IT survey forecasted strong growth for the technology, as buyers want to replace their multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) with a nimbler and more affordable alternative.
